Who Hit Me With a Sledge Hammer?

Who in the HECK hit me with a sledge hammer yesterday? I would like a severe, stern word with him or her, and then I would like to repay the deed with all the fervor I can currently muster.

Many of you are long-time readers and know of my saga of raging headaches from posts like this and this. After the spinal tap, the doctors and I had hoped that it would be a long-term fix, and that I wouldn't have any further headaches beyond my normal migraines once in a blue moon.

That was for naught, because within a week, the headaches were back.

I did get a diagnosis, though -- idiopathic intracranial hypertension. The GREAT news is there is no optic nerve damage yet (which is great, because this can make you go blind), there is NO tumor, there is NO cancer, and there is NO aneurysm. All big, HUGE bonuses. The bad news is there really isn't a cure, per se. I take two medications that dehydrate me big time and make me very, very tired, and I'm still getting adjusted to them and the doctors are playing around with the dosage. And when things get super-bad, spinal taps. Again.

What all that has to do with sledge hammers is yesterday I was doing fine, and as we were walking into Lowes to buy the paint for my lampwork studio, I got a rapid-onset migraine. What the...? Two types of headaches at once? You have got to be kidding me. But we got the paint, got me home, I took a shot, fell into bed, and my husband, who is a saint, painted the entire studio for me.

(I'll show you pictures later -- but I CAN tell you that it's three colors, one of which is purple, and one of which made my husband raise his eyebrows and ask me if I was really sure.)

I know this has been hard on Zack. But he showed me today that I am indeed loved. He called me into his playroom and with my eyes squinted half-open, I see this:

See, that's a heart coming out of a headache.

So much for the sledge hammer. It's relegated to the garage for now.

  1. oh Lori, you poor thing. I am so sorry you're still dealing with the headaches. Zach is a wonderful child and how thoughtful and special of him to draw you such a lovely picture, that should have taken the pain away if only for a couple of seconds :)

  2. I am wishing you peace dear Lori. Rest and relax and we will all send calm and protective thoughts your way.
    Enjoy the day!

  3. NO question about it, headaches suck. I've suffered from them my entire life, though nothing like yours. I seem to be in a bit of a lull right now and haven't had too many of late. Hopefully the doctors can get your meds sorted out and you'll have some relief. I'll send lots of positive energy your way.

  6. Lori, I'm so sorry you're having continued challenges with your headaches. Although not the resolution that would be preferred (a curable diagnosis), it is a good thing to have a name for the cause of your pain.

Zack is clearly a glass-half-full fellow! Look at the smile on that headache sufferer!

I hope your crazy studio colors raise your spirits and soothe your head :)

  13. Hi Lori!
So sorry to hear about the headaches. They sound AWFUL! What a sweet gesture from Zach....I'm sure that did make you feel a bit better. Very sweet! Hope you're better soon!
    Hugs, Diane

  14. So sorry to hear about that! But Zack's drawing is so wonderful.

The word identification word below right now is "mismabil" - I think that must describe how you were feeling....

  15. So many of us feel for bad as mine have been I don't think they are anything like what you have. Praying for releif to come. I love your sons picture... even the grass seems to have hearts in it.

  16. Lori,
I don't know if you have ever tried a chiropractor that does Applied Kinesiology. They use muscle testing to determine how best to treat patients. My "guy" is a chiro and was trained in this area. Do a google search and read up on it. It might give you some relief. Dick's website is You can see what it is about, then check for Dr.s in your area. hope it helps.

  17. Knowing what it IS and IS NOT must be some relief in itself. Best wishes for an effective way to manage your pain.
