It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

Zack and I always decorate the tree together.  This year, we decided to forgo our traditional (and quite breakable) Christmas ornaments we've collected over the years and went to Target to buy (gasp and sigh) plastic ornaments.  Now why would we do such a thing, you may ask?

Vernon has never experienced Christmas with us before and he likes to play with LEGOs and beads and anything he can bat around.  Many's the night Rick and I have woken up to the sound of SOMETHING skittering across the floor.  I've told Zack if Vernon ever gets sick, it's bound to be because he ate a LEGO.

So off Zack and I trekked to Target, and I let Zack pick everything.   And I have to admit -- I flipping love what he chose.  COLOR!  GLITTER!  All sorts of sizes and textures!  He's going to be a great jewelry designer, although lately he's determined to become a policeman who does art on the side.

(Yes, I've been playing around with Picnik.)

I'm an early shopper, buying most of the gifts at craft shows and online, so I spent one day last week wrapping presents.  Done, done, and done. I've NEVER been done this soon.  Ever!  So don't think I'm this uber-organized person when it comes to the holidays.  My house still needs dusting and it's only thanks to Rick that we have lights up outside.

If you have a blog post with your decorations up, please put your link in the comments section!

  4. We have been having a ball at our house decorating too. We do plastic ornaments as well - but mostly because we are a rambuctious (read that clumsy) group. Here is the link to my blog post - http://fireflyvisions.blogspot.com/2011/12/christmas-crunch-time.html

  5. I'm usually the most organized person when it comes to Christmas: shopping list made in October, all the gifts are bought by the first week of December (when the decorations are put up), wrapped by the second, third week is for baking and the last days before D day for meeting up with friends, final touches and lots of Frank Sinatra. This year I've made it as far as decorations and I've bought all my gifts. And I blogged about the decorations here:

  8. OMG ! Zack is blessed with an great eye for color and design. Love those deep lush jewel tones.

Isn't it lovely when you drop one of the plastic ornaments and it bounces instead of shattering ? :)

  14. So lovely!!!!! Love that tree, great job Zach! I have a feeling my kids would have gone for the same thing. GLITTER!!!! Its funny- because in everything else I am very earth tone oriented, but at Christmas I could drown things in glitter. :)

  20. I love Zack's choices. The colors are great and it's all very coordinated but not matchy-matchy. Love that! I just blogged about my Christmas crafting -- I'm really not into it this year! But I needed to do something. Hope you have a wonderful holiday!

  21. Hi Lori, Great and wonderfully colorful tree. We stopped putting up trees the year that my two cats tipped it over and chewed up the light cords. I am surprised they were still alive. I have a very little tree and one cat now who leaves it alone. I did go all out with outdoor lights this year- it is so cheerful to come home to.
I am not shopping this year except to get snaps
tomorrow so I can finish my daughter's gift and mail it. I hope you have a wonderful Holiday and I am looking forward to the next Bead Soup Hop.
Love and Hugs to you and your family.

  22. No white tree this year?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes - furbabies and toddlers have a tendency to cause a person to change the way they decorate a tree. :D Zack did a great job of picking them out. Pretty tree!

  24. I just posted my decorations today! Kudos to you and Zach for picking out practical ornaments this year -- and esp. to you for being DONE! http://indulgeyourshelf.blogspot.com/2011/12/silent-sunday-my-version-of-wordless.html

  27. The kid is going to make a great jewelry designer :) And I think his plans so sound pretty good - cops need something to help them relax and whats more relaxing then playing with beads? Although I suspect in another month or so the 'cop' plans will have been replaced by something else.. and again and again ..;) Just hope that the love of beads, colors and designing sticks :)

And I have NEVER been this late with my Christmas prep. Home made gifts for coworkers, yeah...I usually still have one or two the finish the night before I give them lol but by now I'm usually done shopping, have a few decorations up and am in the process of clearing wrapping space on my floor and thinking of distractions for my cats to keep them out of the way. I just STARTED my shopping and plan on finishing it off tomorrow after work... and I have exactly ONE decoration up... a little felted snowman that I found jammed back on a shelf with my bills from last year .. so I hung him in the center of my blackrose & skull wreath on my kitchen door. Did I mention I have favorite 'Halloween' decorations that stay up year round and get co-opted into Christmas? lol I'm going to do some jewelry work then take a break and do my decorating, so I'll share photos on my blog later :D hehe

  28. Lori,
Beautiful tree! Zack did a wonderful job at picking out the decorations. I say great profession choice Zack made and is totally do-able since I'm in Law Enforcement and do my art on the side. I once had a cat that loved to take the bottom ornaments off of the tree and bat them all over the floor. The first Christmas I had him I woke up to breaking glass. He was taking the ornaments off and watching them crash to the floor. That next morning I went out and got plastic. There was no more breaking noise just bouncing of the ornament as it hit the floor (wood flooring) and then a thump when he landed on the floor, then the batting of the ornament all over the floor. One night of that was enough he spent the rest of the Holiday nights in the bedroom with me. I have not posted Christmas decorations yet.
Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year!
    Therese

  29. The tree looks awesome! I will pass along wisdom from my childhood for Zack... do NOT put the catnip under the tree on Christmas Eve before you go to bed! The pretty package you so lovingly wrapped WILL be shredded and all those pretty ornaments will be scattered (or shattered in my case) about! However, the kitty will be VERY happy laying on his back looking up at all the pretty lights... Enjoy ~~T

  30. That kid has a great eye for color. The apple didn't fall far from the tree!
    Enjoy the day.

  32. The tree looks great! This is our first Christmas with Buster (our 1 yr old Border Collie) so I hung the crappy ornaments toward the bottom of the tree... just in case. Riley destroyed her fair share of ornaments at the age. Buster has been good with the ornaments (so far) but there's a particular stuffed grinch that he likes to steal and give the death shake.

  37. Vernon is so cute! Too funny about how he likes to bat anything and everything around. Your tree is beautiful too-you and Zack did a fantastic job! I am missing the tree decorating aspect of Christmas this year. We put up our tree and lights on it, but decided not to add our ornaments because we don't want to add more unpacking/packing to our list (we will be moving to Virginia in two weeks). I am grateful for the two ornament hops I participated in as those ornaments are on the tree and add some sparkle to it! As long as I have my husband, our dog Twila and a Christmas tree with lights on it, my Christmas will be merry!

  38. Vernon is just gorgeous! We have Spud who has only seen one Christmas so far and not with us so we used unbreakable stuff too. At first he was into the tree all the time, but now the novelty seems to have worn off.
