Today I'm pleased to review "Hot Connections Jewelry -- The Complete Sourcebook of Soldering Techniques" by Jennifer Chin and published by Potter Craft. And guess what? I'm giving it away!
I love the pristine cover from the start. It speaks of modern jewelry with a timeless appeal, and fills in a space in the soldering book market that has been lacking (in my opinion). It runs 160 pages, and they're all chock-full of instruction, projects, and valuable tips and hints.
The book is broken down into six sections, and each section (other than the Basics chapter) has three projects which build upon the skills learned in that section:
1. Soldering Basics
2. Essential Fabrication & Soldering Techniques
(sawing, drilling, riveting, soldering, shaping)
3. Forming Metal: Other Fabrication Techniques
(scoring, bending, forging, dapping)
4. Textures, Patinas, & Finishing
(chasing, reticulation, rolling mills, patinas, polishing)
5. Adding Stones & Beads
(gemstones vs other materials, setting stones)
The projects are nothing like I've seen in other books. They're modern, sleek, and almost architecturally influenced. Yet you could take these designs and easily move them to the whimsical and playful arena, as is evidenced in the extensive (and gorgeous!) gallery photos.
Is this a book for the beginner? I believe so. Don't let the amazing cover fool you or scare you. Is this a book for the more advanced artist? Certainly. That's the beauty of this book. There is truly something for everyone, and many, many jumping-off points for your own creativity.

That looks like a very interesting book with an attractive cover. I've never really got around to learning how to solder (with a torch), but it's on my things-to-learn list.
Ok I think I did that right! I would love to win that book... I added it to my want list a couple of days ago! Some days I can solder just fine other days I melt everything I go near!

Hope things are well it seem like forever since Iv'e been out for a hop, i miss my regular moring hop & coffee after i drop Jack off at school, but i have been enjoying all the time spent with him & his peeps. I love this giveaway, i have all the tools waiting in my studio for a book just like this, i would love to win. Good and important to know the basics of the jewelry making procedures to make good and saleable products.If they look good and not stick together for long the customers won't be happy to come back again.

Desperately wanting to learn how to solder, I signed up for a class at Bead Fest in August. I am very excited to learn and bet this book would complement the class beautifully!
