hey gorgeous, fab post, really informative. I use sterling silver in my designs but just haven't got the finances to keep up {it would help if I could sell my creations! lol!}...am thinking of diversifying {which is logical anyway} but keep thinking it won't be the same "quality" on offer.....but of course, it will be! Something I just need to get my head around I think....
The cost of both silver and gold, made me rethink where I was going with my designing, so I spent last year making a change. I think I might write about it on my blog. Jackie
Yes, I have been watching! I am glad I don't need any silver right now, but I sometimes feel that I should buy some just in case the cost goes even higher.
Prior to making jewelry, I was a gold girl but now I love silver. But will be honest I am too cheap to purchase sterling. I did make some lovely earings for a co-worker who preceded to tell me she can only wear high quality metals. hmmm. will have to keep that in mind if I sell some jewelry.. sorry for the rambling... Love your bracelet!
Oh, oh oh - but that's such a pretty bracelet! Silver is lovely, isn't it? I'm sure the price will come down again eventually. I love brass, pewter and copper anyway so I don't think I'll be affected greatly but it is shockingly expensive now. Great post on ABS - thanks Lori!
Great post. Here in my Florence OR. area most people are just not using silver at all. One of the bead stores actually bagged up all the silver she had and sold it off. She is using the money to buy brass and other metals. Nicole/Beadwright
Thank you for a great post, and the idea of using other beads and metals to make one's jewelry unique. I work with sterling silver and gold-fill mainly and Copper also does well with clients. One of the metals that I have been incorporating into my work is rhodium-plated Tierracast lead free Pewter, looks like silver, though not as delicate, but works in many cases, especially toggles, charms and spacer beads. I am not drawn to brass, though I am trying to work with it.
Great article, thank so much for writing that. I seem to be doing ok incorporating products other than silver into finished jewelry pieces. I'm struggling with it in my metalwork, I love spinner rings and non silver ones just don't seem to move. I am however having a blast with copper bangles, so I guess it's a trade off.
Anyway--I love silver, silverplate, copper, and brass. I'm not into gold that much but I've been mixing it up with copper and brass for a while now. The prices of Sterling kept forcing me to try other metals.
The high price of silver has helped the trend for mixed metals to bloom. I am enjoying alternatives and think it has helped expand the art form. Thanks for the article, I will go back through my stash more carefully!
